Are you familiar with distraction crimes and how they work?

If not, you’ll be up to speed in no time, after reading today’s lesson.

There are two types of distraction crimes on the rise in California…

Distraction # 1 – The “BUMP-N-ROB” Geared mostly toward women…

You’re on the road , on your way to pick-up dinner, and as you slow down for an intersection, you get “bumped” from behind by the car behind you.

You’re natural reaction is to pull over and exchange information with the driver of the vehicle who hit your car. (Especially if your car sustained any damage due to the “bump”.) 

You get out of your car to talk with the driver of the other vehicle and the driver brandishes a gun and says,”Give me your purse, jewelry, and cell phone!”

You comply…the dirtbag drives away… and you’re left standing on the side of the road asking “What the heck just happened to me??”

So… Mr. Professor… what am I supposed to do if someone hits me from behind, you ask? Well… it depends.

Survey your surroundings. Are we in a dark, deserted area? Are other people around if I need help?

Don’t get out of your car if you don’t feel safe! Call 911 or a relative and explain what happened.

If the driver approaches your window, you aren’t required to roll it down.

And you’re not under any time restraints to exchange information. as long as you’re both at the scene.

Be careful and use common sense!

Distraction #2 - “THE RESIDENTIAL BREAKDOWN” Practiced in residential neighborhoods…

There’s a knock at the door…

You look through the peephole or out of the side window and see a “normal looking guy” at your door. You may also see a vehicle parked in front of your house with the engine hood lifted up, possibly attended by another “normal looking guy” , or even a young woman.

The standard request from the guy at your door is to “borrow your phone” to call for a mechanic or a tow truck.

If you do not recognize the person outside, DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR!

This is a common ploy to get the front door open… without force… in order to rob you of your property!

A good way to handle this is to talk through the door and reply with something like,”My husband is on the phone. Sorry!”

Obviously, these are only two examples of distraction techniques that crooks are using today to make their job easier. 

Don’t fall for these types of distractions… you’re smarter than that! Use your noggin’… and be careful!

    There are laws and penalties on every level you can imagine. (By the way, did you  know it was against the law in Ca.to  spit on the sidewalk?)

 What happened to just following the 10 Commandments??

 The answer is actually very simple…

Man is evil! ( I would include women in that statement as well… and yes…even the pretty ones!)

Evil = more laws needed!

Yep… the sad fact is… we’re not all nice people. I would categorize a majority of people on this planet as law-abiding, gentle-spirited citizens.

Unfortunately though, there is an element of society that lives by a different set of rules. Or actually… they don’t live by any rules at all.

There are many names for these types of people… such as:( the politically correct ones) criminals, parolees, offenders,violators, suspects, etc.

Then there are the “slang” terms that are often used when emotions play a factor: dirtbag, scum, roach, mook, doper, pervert, etc. (I won’t mention all the other “bleep” words that are commonly used by many) Let me tell you… these guys & gals can get real creative when it comes to plotting and scheming. (more on that soon!) Some are fearful of getting caught by the law… but many don’t give a rip about the potential of losing their freedom.

The Law Enforcement agencies in our country do an outstanding job of “baggin’ & toe taggin” out on the street every day. But, many agencies are simply short-handed or under-funded and just can’t keep up with the amount of criminal activity on a regular basis.

Sometimes… we’re going to need to protect ourselves, right?  Think about your mental options as a potential victim…

Option # 1 : Do nothing …because “it won’t happen to me”. (worst)

Option # 2: If I were to feel threatened, I’ll just call the Police.(better, but don’t count on getting help very fast)

Option # 3: Read this blog and become proactive about security and self-defense! (No-Brainer!)
